This past week we had the pleasure of sitting with one of the most talented and influential leaders in the AV (Audio Visual & Production) space in the Caribbean: Kay-Andra Gardiner, newly appointed COO of Zamar Group of Companies, in the beautiful Nassau Bahamas.
We asked her a few questions about her work and experiences:
1. You’re in the beautiful Bahamas, which sometimes means your work brings you in proximity to celebrities. Tell us, what’s your favorite “pinch-me” moment over the years?
My favorite “pinch-me” moment over the years was Brian McKnight’s performance during the Michael Jordan Celebrity Golf Tournament. I grew up listening to 90’s RnB and Brian McKnight had always been a favorite artist of mine. So for our company to provide the production and to be backstage during his show, I was in heaven.
2. Your job must require a lot of creativity. Have you ever had to improvise a last-minute solution that turned out to be a game-changer for an event?
Oh my gosh! Yes! A few years ago we came up with a game show concept for a client but when it came to the execution, everything that could go wrong went wrong which forced us to improvise with our game show. Ultimately the team and I adjusted our concept to a Hollywood Squares game show, with elevated boxes and everything and it ended up being the client’s most engaging executive event for their attendees. The best part of that experience is that we shifted with less than 6 hours before rehearsal. My team is really great at adjusting and it’s what our clients love about us.
3. In the world of audiovisual magic, what’s the most “magical” event you’ve helped to orchestrate?
To date, our team orchestrated and executed a climate change event for one of our corporate clients that I believe was magic. Within the ballroom space, we had to visually and through utilizing all senses have all four seasons present. It was truly an experiential event and was well received by all.
I’m most excited for a new project coming up this December where we will be taking audio visual technology to another level in The Bahamas. You definitely want to check back with us for a recap of that event!
4. You’re surrounded by stunning scenery where we can imagine logistics would be a bit tricky. Can you describe the most challenging parts of doing business on an island?
The most challenging part of doing business on the island is that most of what we need has to be imported. This sometimes translates to slightly higher costs than in North America. On the flip side, the best part is that we are able to make it all happen for our clients with ease, efficiency and cost effectively.
5. As a female COO in this high-profile industry, as well as in a traditionally male-dominated industry, what advice do you have for other women aspiring to reach executive positions and bring a touch of star power to their careers?
Honestly, I learned how to set and stick to my personal life boundaries. Our industry can be all consuming so I make it a point to take time for myself and do the things I enjoy.
